Golden Gate Bay Cruise A San Francisco Original
Table Of Content
This Straight to the Gate Access bay cruise takes you all around the San Francisco Bay and under both bay bridges, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Oakland Bay Bridge. Enjoy great views of the San Francisco city skyline, Chrissy Field, Aquatic Park, and the Palace of Fine Arts, while listening to live music, from the comfort of a classy ship. Jump to maps showing the typical routes the bay cruises use. On New Year's Eve and Fourth of July, dozens of San Francisco boat tours head out on the water to watch the fireworks shows. First, this bay cruise is smaller and offers a more intimate experience. This one is better if you are looking for a more romantic evening on the water.

This cruise also includes a guided tour of the bay, narrated by the captain. In order to hear the audio, you will need a smart phone with wifi enabled; also, it's best to bring some ear buds or a headset to hear it over the sound of the boat. The Golden Gate Sunset Cruise in San Francisco goes out on the Red & White Fleet. This is a fun way to get out on the bay and see the city as the sun goes down, with all the lights coming on. The Alcatraz Ferry doesn't go around the island, except on their night tours. This is a family-run business that takes you out for a tour of the Bay and provides a large selection of California wines for you to try.
San Francisco City Tour & Bay Cruise
You will get some great views of the sunset as long as the fog has not decided to make its way into the bay before the sun goes down. The Twilight Cruise is offered during the winter months (roughly early November through mid-March). It's called a Twilight Cruise since the sun will already be down by the time the cruise is underway. You can stop by their dock at any time to confirm which tour you can go on for the day of your ticket. They are also usually flexible with timing too on which San Francisco boat tour you can board unless it's a really busy day. The boat cruise leaves from Fisherman's Wharf and starts out along the northern waterfront.
POLICE SURGEONS BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION CAR SHOW
Check out the art galleries and shops and have some great seafood at one of their highly-regarded restaurants (e.g. Trident, or Scoma's). The link below will take you to a list I made of the more popular Alcatraz combination tours available. Sometimes the combos are a little more than buying them individually, but may be the best chance of getting a ticket when Alcatraz is sold out. For that you have to take one of the other cruises.
Also, it was a pretty calm day on SF Bay when we went. I was worried about being seasick but I was fine. I'd had a really rough whale-watching trip off Monterey years ago and was reluctant to try this one, but I'm glad I did. These are big ferries; no reservations are needed. You can buy the tickets on your phone, online, or at the ticket booths at the Ferry Building or the Blue and Gold ticket booth to the left of Pier 39 on the Wharf.
Benicia Historic Sightseeing Cruises
The only cruise with award winning, complimentary multilingual headphone audio in 16 languages. We take A LOT of pride in our vessels, keeping them clean, safe and in top operating condition at all times. We are bringing the historic Harbor Queen to Benicia for a limited run of sightseeing cruises May 18 and 19, to coincide with the Harold Bray Monument Dedication Weekend. A jaw-dropping one-hour nonstop adventure for your senses.
Take the Alcatraz ferry over to the island where you can explore the prison and the rest of the grounds. Audio tour and guided tours included in the ticket. See all my info on tours, booking and best way to get tickets.
Family Owned and Operated for over 130 years
This is a really fun cruise and worth the extra money for a delightful experience. If you want a full write up of what to expect on this tour, you can also visit this page. It's my overview with more pictures and what to expect. In this case, I reviewed my time with the Red and White Fleet. Your ticket is good for any cruise for that day.
Some get seasick no matter what, but generally, it's not rolling enough on the bay for most people to get sick. Both the Red and White Fleet and the Blue and Gold Fleet in San Francisco do one hour cruises of the bay. Both tours sail past the San Francisco waterfront, go out under the Golden Gate Bridge and then sail around Alcatraz Island.
The other thing to note about these bay cruises is they do require that you dress up a little bit. No jeans are allowed, and they require business casual dress. They have larger boats in order to accommodate tables for their dinner dance cruises and they also have a higher price tag because so much more is included with this ticket. The Sunset Cruise is offered the rest of the year (roughly from mid-March through early November).
I have an article about Fleet Week in San Francisco which includes cruise recommendations. These book up so plan ahead if you want to do one of these. One of their more popular cruises is the SF Fleet Week cruise.
When you arrive, you will line up for the cruise and those in front will board first. You'll pass Sausalito, Angel Island and take some time cruising past Alcatraz Island. As I mentioned in my intro, this is by far the most popular cruise and a go to for many first-time visitors.
Children ages 4 and under receive complimentary admission to Red and White cruises but need to be ticketed for capacity control. As we head west toward the Golden Gate Bridge, you'll view Fort Mason and the Marina District, which was damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Next take in views of Crissy Field and the lush hillsides of the Presidio - both former Army installations - that are now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Don't miss incredible photo opportunities while cruising directly under the massive 4,200-foot long, 746-foot high span of the Golden Gate Bridge. At certain times of year (mainly in October), there are lots of great white sharks swimming up and down the coast past San Francisco.
There are so many great San Francisco bay tours and boat cruises that it can be hard to find the perfect one. The San Francisco Sailing Company runs several bay tours on their sailboats that I highly recommend. Most of the boat tours don't go under the Bay Bridge, so it's an extra treat. This route also gives you a spectacular view of the downtown San Francisco skyline, and sails past the Ferry Building and Oracle Park (baseball). There usually aren't discounts for these San Francisco bay tours, but I do highly recommend booking your tickets early.
This peaceful chair-lined beach is a quiet spot away from the family beach, where I can sit back and enjoy the view or take a chair down to the water and let the waves crash over me. Some other cruise line's private islands, like Norwegian's Great Stirrup Cay, don't have a dock, so cruisers must take tender ships (small boats) from the cruise ship to the island. Over the past decade, I've taken eight Disney cruises with my family and friends. When I book, I always make sure Disney's private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay, is on the port of call. We are dedicated to catering to the needs and expectations of all our customers throughout their journey, which is why we have flexible food and beverage options.
